The early postpartum period is crucial for recovery from childbirth and attainment of the maternal role, especially mother-infant attachment. To foster mother-infant attachment, the rooming-in system has been known as the most ideal approach. For successful implementation of the enforcement of rooming-in system, it is essential that the mothers and health professionals appropriately perceive and actively participate on this system. The purpose of this study is to do a comparative study on the perceptions of early postpartum mothers, physicians, and nurses on the rooming-in system. The significance of the study is to contribute to the promotion of rooming-in system in the early postpartum period. Data was gathered by questionnaire on the perception of the rooming-in which was developed by the researcher based on references and consultation with the health professionals. The data was collected from Feb. 25th to Mar. 15th 1996 from the sample which included 120 nurses, 86 physicians, and 111 early postpartum mothers in one general hospital utilizing part-time rooming-in system, and 7 general hospitals with room separation nursery system. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, ANOVA, t-test and Cronbach¡¯s Alpha.

The result were summarized as follows :

Among the perceptions of the nurses on the rooming-in system, the factor with the highest score was found to be the perception on successful implementation method(M=3.68, SD=0.52). The factor with the lowest score, on the other hand, was the desirable method on the system(M=2.66, SD=0.84).

Among the perceptions of the physicians on the rooming-in system, the factor with the highest score was the perception on successful implementation method(M=3.45, SD=0.63). On the contrary, the factor with the lowest score was the recognition of the meaning of the system(M=2.42, SD=1.01).

Among the perceptions of the mothers in postpartum, the factor with the highest score was the perception on the successful implementation method(M=3.43, SD=0.78), while the factor with the lowest score was the evaluation of advantages and disadvantages of the system(M=2.58, SD=0.84).

Comparing the perceptions of the nurses, physicians, and mothers in postpartum on the rooming-in system, we concluded that :

a) The attitudes towards rooming-in system differed significantly among three groups(P<0.01).

b) The recognition of the meaning of the rooming-in system differed significantly among three groups(P<0.001).

c) The perceptions of the desirable method differed significantly among three groups(P<0.001).

d) The evaluation of advantages and disadvantages of the rooming-in system differed significantly among three groups(P<0.001).

e) The perceptions of the problems of the rooming-in system differed significantly among three groups(P<0.001).

f) The perceptions of the successful implementation method of the rooming-in system differed significantly among three groups(P<0.001).

Finally, the results of significant tests for the variables which related the perception of nurses, physicians, mothers were as follows :

The significance test for the variables which related the perception of nurses toward the rooming-in system

1. The perceptions of the desirable method of the rooming-in system differed significantly according to the religion(p<0.05) and the degree of educational background(P<0.04).

2. The perceptions of the successful implementation method of the rooming-in system differed significantly according to whether or not they known of the meaning of the rooming-in system was known(P<0.001).

3. The evaluation of advantages and disadvantages of the rooming-in system differed significantly according to the position of each individual in the department hierarchy(P<0.001).

4. The perceptions of problems associated with the rooming-in system differed significantly according to the position(P<0.02) and total clinical tenure of each interviewee(P<0.001).

The significance tests for the variables which showed the perception of mothers in regard to the rooming-in system :

1. The recognition of meaning of the rooming-in system differed significantly according to whether there was prior information about the rooming-in system(P<0.05), and according to whether there was a caregiver or not(P<0.05).

2. The evaluation of advantages and disadvantages of the rooming-in system differed according to whether the has older children or not(P<0.03) and the delivery method(P<0.05).

3. The attitudes toward rooming-in system differed significantly according to the degree of educational background(P<0.04).

4. The perceptions of the problems of the rooming-in system differed significantly according to whether or not the sex of newborn was the one the mother anticipated(P<0.03).
